The story of late Mohammud Haujee is a true testament to the power of adaptability and in business. Starting out as a small textiles shop in Port Louis, Mauritius in 1945, Mohammud Haujee quickly realized the precarious nature of the textiles industry at that time and pivoted to gold and silver jewellery just one year later.
In 1949 he continued to innovate and expand his business, by introducing embroidery and importing silver jewels and imitation jewellery from Europe.
In 1951 he introduced the wristwatches business and became the sole importer of popular wristwatch brands Mortima, Atlantic, Herodia and Milca from France and Switzerland.
In the 60s, Mohammud Haujee was among pioneer who exported scarped silver to England, showing his willingness to think outside the box and explore new opportunities.
His dedication to his business was evident in 1964 when he purchased the commercial premise at 33, Desforges street, Port Louis.
He continued to grow the business in the following decades, becoming the exclusive agent and distributor of Bernina sewing machines from Switzerland in 1967 and founding the societe Mohammud Haujee & Sons with his sons in 1972.
The business continued to evolve with the times, introducing new jewellery production techniques and state of the art machinery in the 90s. In 2010, they even introduced a computerized engraving machine and the latest welding technologies for jewellery.
Today, the business is still going strong under the management of Mohammud Haujee's son Tadjammul Hussein and grand-son. And with the recent introduction of laser technology machine and jewellery prototyping services it's clear that the spirit of innovation and adaptability that Mohammud Haujee embodied is still alive and well in the company he started over 75 years
